Dehradun, India

Dehradun is situated in the newly formed Himalayan state of Uttaranchal around 235 km from Delhi at the center of the Doon valley. Four very important assets of India make a barrier around the city, Himalayas to the north, the Shivalik Mountain Range to the south, the sacred Ganges to the east and the Yamuna to the west. Tapovan is the place where it is believed that Guru Dronacharya (of Mahabharata) had his ashram. Tapkeshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is known for its association with Mahabharata. Dehra Dun is an old historial town. It is a main town of Garhwal and Uttaranchal. It is also called Doon Valley . Earlier this Valley was a huge lake. But ecological changes have made the lake disappear as also the dense forest and wild animals. Historical findings show that in the times of Mahabharat the Pandavas used these forests when they were sent on their exile.

1) Tapkeshwar Temple

The temple of Lord Shiva as the God of strict rituals of 'tap', it stands majestically on the outskirts of the city with a long flight of stairs to ascend. A picture-perfect beauty, There is a gushing river flowing by its sides that complement the main temple and other shrines studding the area with its pleasant cool waters. The best time to visit the place is in March, when a big fair is held here on Shivaratri.

2) Forest Research Institute

Forest Research Institute or the FRI, is one of the best research institutes devoted to the same purpose all around the world. A vast extensive museum in its premises displays a wide range of diverse botanical specimens. Open on all, weekdays from Monday to Friday, it is a great experience to witness the innumerable species of vegetation on the Earth. The Botanical Garden set in the campus is another attraction of the place.

3) Rajaji National Park

Rajaji National Park , situated at the edge of the sprawling Dehradun valley, was founded in 1966 and spreads over an area of about 820 sq. km. Nestled in a lush valley of the Shivalik Range , the park is an ideal holiday resort with its many picnic spots and excursion sites for the nature lover.

4) Malsi Deer Park

This park is 8 km from the city, Malsi Deer Park is on the road to Mussoorie. A good picnic spot, the park is as the name suggests home to the gentle and shy deers who can be seen nibbling at the grass from a distance but any effort to go near them alerts them instantly and they run off and disappear in the thick bushes of the park. Cool breeze and giggles and chuckles of the young children who are thrilled to see this big-eyed creature is enough to fill anybody with new enthusiasm and zest for life.

5) Robber's Cave

This cave is 8 km from Dehra Dun , just beyond the Anarwala village, the famous Robber's Cave is a fabulous picnic spot, which is sure to delight the visitors. The best way to reach the place is to take a bus to the village and then stroll to the pace at a leisurely pace giving yourself time to take in the picturesque surroundings. It is known for a strange phenomenon as a stream of water suddenly disappears from sight at a point and then reappears again a few metres ahead as a squally stream.

1) Rishikesh

A celebrated spiritual centre, Rishikesh enjoys a calm environment, impressive water front and dense forest hills. Virtually a town of saints, sages and scholars, Rishikesh is a large religious centre situated at the right bank of river Ganga .

There are a number of Ashrams where religious discourses are held for the benefit of the visitors. The place is also a renowned centre for Yoga teachings. River rafting is another attraction for Rishikesh. A number of organizations have established their camps 15 kms. Upstream. Good hotels are available in addition to a tourist bungalow and many Dharamshalas.

2) Ahmedabad Languages

Ahmedabad lies in the state of Gujarat and it is due to this fact that, Gujarati is the most widely spoken language in Ahmedabad. 4) Sahastra Dhara

Located 14 km from Dehradun is the famous picnic spot called as the Sahastra Dhara. Noted for their astonishing beauty the medicinal sulphur waterfalls are a great attraction.
Sulphur springs have long been credited with unique healing powers for certain diseases both in the early eastern and the western medical sciences. 14 km from the centre of the city, Sahastradhara is such a place where one can see people coming from far off with their ailing loved ones in search of a natural cure. It also makes an excellent picnic spot with its lush green surroundings and foaming waterfall.

5) Skiing at Mundali

Located in the Dehradun district of Uttar Pradesh, Mundali is 129 kms from Dehradun via Chakrata Dak Pathar Under the Yamuna Hydel Scheme, Dak Pathar has emerged as a tourist spot which boasts of lush green lawns and blooming gardens. It is 45 Kms. situated on Dehradun - Chakrata road and is connected by regular bus service. A tourist bungalow and few hotels are available.

6) Chakrata

Situated at a distance of 92 Kms. from Dehradu, at an elevation of about 700 feet . Chakrata is known for its serene environ and sylvan charm. The place is devoid of all artificiality and one can move in perfect calm & in pollution free atmosphere. One can find accommodation in the forest rest house. There are few ordinary hotel also.

The northern part of Chakrata sub-division, Provides most fascinating area for trekkers and nature lovers.Covered by dense virgin forest dotted with attractive village of colourful Jaunsari tribe, the area is dominated by 10,000 feet high peak of Kharamba .

On its northern slopes is situated Mundali (9,000), where skiing is possible during the period from November to April. Deoband (9,000) Kanasar (8500), Kathiyan (7000) (all connected by road), Molta (7000), Tiger Fall near Chakrata are some other spots worth visiting. The famous temple of Mahasu Deota at Hanol is annually visited by thousands of pilgrims from Garhwal and Himachal Pradesh.

 7) Lakhamandal

About 80 Kms. from Mussoorie on Mussoorie - Yamnotri road Lakhamandal is believed to be the place where Duryodhana of Mahabharat episode conspired to burn alive the Pandavas in the Lakshyagriha a house specially constructed with shellac. There is a temple believed to be constructed in the eighth century with a number of carved figures on stone which are of archaeological significance. Taxis are available at Mussoorie for visiting the place. There is however, no place to stay at present.
